The Nature of Being:

The Nature of Being:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

The human constitution may be considered as an evolution proceeding from nothing to consciousness, this relates to the four worlds of the qabalah and can be understood as the union of male and female giving birth to being, a being develops consciousness and lastly by becoming self-aware the intellect is developed. Via our experiences we develop our own unique characteristics thus material existence, the world into which we are born, is where the first realization occurs and indeed, it is only per incarnation that we are aware and so the material world must also be divine, or at least it is in context of human experience. It is within the world of the elements where spirit is liberated, as it is here that the gift of experience is inherited by that within each of us that is eternal.

It is also the nature of the spirit that give’s man the ability to attain the rapturous joy associated with union between an individual and the gods. It is impossible to appreciate anything unless it is accompanied by experience, thus the function of the noetic faculty comes into the picture. The connection between spirit and matter is what fills us with aspiration which leads us towards and along the path of return. This connection between spirit and matter is experienced by people to a lesser or greater degree, but only some are drawn to the work by being imbued with a strong enough aspiration. This is more than likely due to karma and the capacity of the astral body, which is determined by its nature and maturity.

The astral body is associated with the unconscious and its language is spoken and understood in symbols, therefore all the archetypes are found there and also the religious symbolism throughout history speaks to this part of the soul. The astral body which is associated to Yesod establishes a link between consciousness and spirit, the relationship between the two is perceived intellectually by the Ruach. The astral body is therefore that which receives influence of a divine nature from the gods and these are then communicated to the intellect.

The idea is then to bring these three aspects of being into accord, so that, that which is divine may be manifested into material existence. The male and female qualities spoken of, that manifests into existence, or the spermatozoon and the ovum that unites to give birth to creation are associated with the Supernal Triad on the Tree of Life, or the Logos and the Cup of Babalon. This creation is the manifestation of the Demiurge which gives form to opposites, that forms what leads to the Demiurgic Art, which in other words is known as the Great Work. As it is within this world of opposites that we are brought to awareness in the material world, and it is only through self awareness, that an individual may create a masterpiece, which is in harmony with the laws that govern the known universe and congruent with the Word, thus making it an unique interpretation of the Logos.

III,11: This shall be your only proof. I forbid argument. Conquer! That is enough. I will make easy to you the abstruction from the ill-ordered house in the Victorious City. Thou shalt thyself convey it with worship, o prophet, though thou likest it not. Thou shalt have danger & trouble. Ra-Hoor-Khu is with thee. Worship me with fire & blood; worship me with swords & with spears. Let the woman be girt with a sword before me: let blood flow to my name. Trample down the Heathen; be upon them, o warrior, I will give you of their flesh to eat!

We are not just expected to sit in the shade and to find comfort in beggary and complaining, but charged with the task of interpreting the Word and to create in accordance with, for each our own talents. Therefore, Ra-Hoor-Khuit is a martial god representing the Demiurgic Art. And for those who are willing to give all, success is their proof; and a life lived in "splendour &.pride" is ensured.

I,61: But to love me is better than all things: if under the night-stars in the desert thou presently burnest mine incense before me, invoking me with a pure heart, and the Serpent flame therein, thou shalt come a little to lie in my bosom. For one kiss wilt thou then be willing to give all; but whoso gives one particle of dust shall lose all in that hour. Ye shall gather goods and store of women and spices; ye shall wear rich jewels; ye shall exceed the nations of the Earth in splendour & pride; but always in the love of me, and so shall ye come to my joy. I charge you earnestly to come before me in a single robe, and covered with a rich headdress. I love you! I yearn to you! Pale or purple, veiled or voluptuous, I who am all pleasure and purple, and drunkenness of the innermost sense, desire you. Put on the wings, and arouse the coiled splendour within you: come unto me!

III,17: Fear not at all; fear neither men nor Fates, nor gods, nor anything. Money fear not, nor laughter of the folk folly, nor any other power in heaven or upon the earth or under the earth. Nu is your refuge as Hadit your light; and I am the strength, force, vigour, of your arms.

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 8:

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 8:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

“Thy next supposition comes up now for consideration, namely: “That the Soul, through such activities, generates from itself a faculty of imagination in regard to the future, or else that the emanations from the realm of nature bring demons into existence through inherent forces especially when the emanations are derived from animals.”

“For one absurdity appears at the outset namely that demons are generated and perishable things.”

All insights must follow the same rule and descend through the higher worlds until finally being interpreted by the intellect. The last of the superior races and the most closely related to the physical body and the intellect are demons, but they are pre-existent to incarnation.

“Besides these considerations, how is it possible that the energies of the divisible soul, which is held fast in a body, be transformed into essence and be separated by themselves outside of the soul? Or how may the faculties incident in the bodies, which have their very being in the bodies be separated from them?”

Firstly, it is interesting to note the nature of the astral body as being divisible here called the soul and how its connection to the faculties of the physical body is associated with the nature of demons. The ether is a sempiternal storehouse of influence, and of course our ethereal bodies are created from the same substance, thus linking us to the Divine Mind and all its subsequent emanations, this is also concerned with the physical and intellectual nature of an individual, whose attributes are established by a union of energies that are sympathetic and thus the soul or the ethereal body is divisible when disconnected from the body. The ancients must have believed that animals shared some of the essences present in the human soul and by releasing the soul from an animal, thus gave demons a medium to manifest through, as the ethereal body that was released became less dense as it was no longer held together by the physical body.

“Or, how can the soul that is discreet and constant as to the better faculties---those of the mind and understanding---be ignorant of what is to be, when the individual that is receptive to the disorderly and turbulent impressions throws the future wide open?”

Here he seems to be stating, that foretelling the future is a lesser form of divination to that of the ecstasy associated with union and that it is the impressions which are received by the intellect that are mostly responsible for such insights, as the soul is immovable in respect to its position and the mind is swayed by sensual and emotional impressions received from the outside world, following that these impressions become the conduit for inspired insights of a divinatory nature.

“Then, again, the passive condition is conscious only of what is going on and what is now in existence, but foreknowledge extends also to those things which as yet do not have being. Hence, foreknowledge is far different from a passive or susceptible condition.”

Contemplation may lead us to insights of the future based on intuition received from impressions associated to our relationship with the Zeitgeist. However, Iamblichus is saying that deeper insights may only be gained through Magick, from which, by an act of Will, the Theurgist is drawing from a deeper source than the one perceptible to the senses, emotions and intellect. Within this source lies the ontology of being, and so the knowledge received from this source extends to things that have not yet come into being, as the source is sempiternal whereas the Zeitgeist only reflects the present and is accordingly limited.

“Why, then, does thy discourse lead off so much from the proposed hypothesis as to be turned from the things superior and beneficial to the worst evils of mania? For in what form does the enthusiastic inspiration resemble melancholy or drunkenness or any other form of alienation originating from morbid conditions of the body? Is not a product of such a kind wholly a destruction, but divine possession a perfecting and deliverance of the soul? Does not the worthless trance happen at the same time as debility, but the superior enthusiastic rapture with complete reign?”

The dark night of the soul is a means by which an initiate purges his soul from its previous impure state, in a way killing his old self so that he may be reborn. Initiation demands a transfiguration of the self that through ordeal manifests as distempers of the body and mind, things such as these can be seen as struggles between the unconscious and the consciousness minds of the individual. These faculties having been brought into more direct communication with each-other, is a phenomenon first experienced as conflict between one another, that results in what is termed an ordeal of initiation and may manifest in the distempers mentioned in the above quote. The same is true for demons, as these form a communications network between the conscious and the unconscious mind or the astral body and physical body, the art of Goetia often results in manifesting distempers as well. The former is positive and leads to the perfecting of the individual and the latter is negative, as it is creating an imbalance, rather than correcting it. Therefore, in the case of initiation, the old self is destroyed, this destruction is painful and is often experienced as the dark night of the soul, which serves as a test of a candidate’s aspiration, whereby the only way through, is to stay true to one’s oath.

“We should not receive that as truth, however, which comes in such a manner by chances; as that also happens to be recorded of those who borne along to no purpose. That, however, is not to be acknowledged as the truth in which the things are done in concert with those that are performing them; for these things coexists with the physical senses and with the perceptive faculties of animals. Hence, that which is done in this way has nothing that is its own, or divine, or superior to what is common to nature,”

Demons in this regard are congruent with instincts at their lowest manifestation, such as in animals and these in humans are the talents that make people uniquely who they are and their intellectual, emotional and sensual characteristics and capabilities are all reflective of the nature of demons. However, until these faculties have been brought under the control of the magician, through the correct application of Theurgy, they are not considered as associated with communicating with the divine and whether or not divinatory insights are proven to be accurate as derived at perchance, is of no account, within the context of the topic presented in this essay, in which case they merely resemble instinct. “This truth, therefore, is in close connection with the art of divination. It ought accordingly to be much more than natural presentiment, such as the instinctive perceiving of earthquakes and great storms of rain, which is possessed by certain animals.” The test of successful divination is not just an intuiting of something that will happen, but the detail in which the future is foretold is indicative of success or failure. As demons serve as a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious, the magician’s relationship to demons greatly improves the accuracy of interpreting visions from the divine nature. Therefore, it is important to cultivate one’s relationship with demons once the soul has been raised to perfection, so that the influence of the divine inspiration may manifest at its most efficacious in the material world.

“If, then divination is truly a divine work of such a character; who then would not be ashamed to attribute it to the agency of nature, that accomplishes its objects without thought, as though it has elaborated in us a power of divining, and had implanted in it in a greater degree in some and in a lesser degree in others? For in those things in which men receive from nature the means for accomplishing their individual undertakings, even in these, certain aptitudes of nature take the lead.”

Everyone is good at something, some at running and others at mathematics, demons represent these faculties. Everything is divine, everything a person does and his aptitude for such is indicative of his unique Great Work, demons tell us what the nature of our souls are and are to be viewed in this way.

“Hence the art of idola is a long way distant from Demiurgic creating. On the contrary, it does not preserve the analogy with divine creating at all. For God creates all things, but not through the physical motions in the sky or by those of particled matter or by the forces thus divided. But instead, it is by thoughts put into activity, by purposes and non-material ideals, through the sempiternal and supermundane soul, that he constructs the worlds.”

Only by realizing our True Wills and doing the Great Work may we aid the evolution of humanity, which is the ideal of any serious occultist. The Demiurge relies on this art for its subsistence, thus we are the gods who through the Great Work inspires God. The only way to realize this is by attaining Knowledge and Conversation with our Holy Guardian Angels, whereby we are moved by Truth. The Demiurgic art is the inspiration an adept receives from the collective unconscious, he then via an act of Magick creates in harmony with the Logos. Idola are spectral visions or figures and are figments of one’s imagination, they are shadows of ideas and are not necessarily in harmony with the will of the Demiurge. Thus, a soul in disharmony is particularly subject to the deception is f false phantoms called idola. Only by the Art of Theurgy may the Soul come to awareness of its True Will and this occurs once K&C is attained.

“What, then, are the powers inherent in various kinds of matter the elementary constituents, of which demons are formed? Verily, and indeed, they are not. For nothing of divisible sensitive bodies originates demons; but these, instead, are themselves generated and watched over by demons. Neither is anybody able to fashion the shapes of demons as from a machine, but rather, on the contrary, he is himself fashioned and constructed by demons according as he partakes of a body possessing sensibilities.”

Demons therefore are not merely portions of the human brain, they are pre-existent to incarnation and are sempiternal, as the lowest race of celestial beings they connect the astral body to the physical body. What this means is that our relationships to demons are largely determined by heredity, ethnicity, and race play a role in the characters of our instincts associated with the unconscious. We can see this when considering an Irishman's unique penchant for poetry and alcohol, or the Hebrew aptitude for commerce. The nature of our astral bodies, are indicated through the unique skills that we possess. Everything we are capable of relies on the communication between ourselves and demons, whether it’s tying my shoe laces or painting a great work of art, I am summoning a demon. So, understood as portions of the brain makes perfect sense, but does not account for the fact that they exist in all of us and after the same manner.

The Devil:

The Devil:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

The twenty sixth path on the Tree of Life is Aiyin and is associated with the Devil Atu of the TAROT. This path connects Tiphareth to Hod or the sphere of the Sun and Mercury respectively. This path is associated with creativity and especially creative pursuits, as Hod is associated with intellect and Tiphareth with creativity, it is interesting to note that Apollo was the god of poetry and is attributed to the sphere of Tiphareth. Apollo is also the twin brother of Artemis and corresponds to Yesod, Tiphareth’s direct reflection on the Tree of Life. This path is also representative of materialism, however it is within this space that the influence of the divine may be clearly expressed through the activities governed by this path, as consciously choosing to experience life as a sacrament we find that all things may equally express the divine qualities of existence.

The joy and beauty of life as a sacrament is also inherent in the symbolism associated with The Devil, and we thus fully embody its archetypal and symbolic nature when we are swept away in rapture (ecstasy) during what some may consider mundane or unspiritual pursuits. The Devil is associated with Capricorn and corresponds to the element of Earth via the card’s association with Saturn per way of Cronos and Rhea the latter having been the daughter of the Earth, both of whom are central figures in the myth associated with Capricorn. Here then is a link to the principle of spirit liberated in matter; a lesson that may be more fully realized through the contemplation of the nature of the path of Aiyin. The Devil affirms that there is none other like unto him “very god of very god”, it is the responsibility of every individual to come to the realization of his or her own unique godhead and within this path the intellect is emphasized as the driving force for transformation. There is an emergence of the divine influence upon this path emanating from the sphere of the sun. The influence of the sun upon this path and the corresponding effect of Mercury links the lower and the higher. Via this connection one's creative faculties are stimulated by the divine influence shining down from the Ethical Triad as reflected from Tiphareth, linking them to the intellect and will, reflecting one's unique place in the world.

The sign of Capricorn is associated with the myth of Amalthea. Zeus was the youngest child of the Titans, Rhea and Cronos, the latter used to eat his children in order to prevent them from one day overthrowing his rule, as had been prophesized. By the time Zeus was born, Rhea was tired of Cronos eating her babies and replaced Zeus with a stone, which Cronos swallowed thinking it was Zeus. She gave her baby to a goat named Amalthea to raise him, until he was old enough to kill his father and avenge his siblings. Soon after the betrayal Cronos realized what had happened and started looking for Zeus, this placed Amalthea and Zeus’s lives in danger and they ended up living in a cave. She hanged Zeus upside down in the cave supposing that he would thus be invisible to the Titans. The trials that Amalthea faced were many and it proved her worth via her ingenuity to be just as able as any of the gods. When Zeus was old enough, he murdered his father and freed his siblings who later became the gods of Olympus, thereby making Amalthea instrumental in the overthrow of the Titans. Her part in the gods’ victory over the Titans was immortalized when she was honored and became the constellation of Capricorn.

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 7:

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 7:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

“If, indeed, we have stated these things rightly, the divining power of the gods is not encompassed in parts by anything --- neither by place, nor by a divisible human body, nor by a soul that is held fast in a single form of divisible qualities, but being separate by itself, and indivisible, it is present everywhere in entirety with those who are able to receive it. Not only does it shine from without, and fill all things, but it likewise permeates all the elements, occupies the earth, and air and fire and water, and leaves nothing destitute of itself --- neither living beings nor things sustained from the realm of nature. On the contrary, it imparts from itself an allotment of the faculty of foreknowing to some in a greater and other in a smaller degree. Existing itself before all things, it is able, by reason of its separateness, to permeate and fill all things, according as every one is able to receive of it.”

The gods are an expression of the Demiurge and the latter is an emanation of The One, thus even Aleister Crowley as the prophet of The Aeon of Horus, was only guided by the collective unconscious which as a result of his high attainment, he was able to predict perfectly and align himself with the nature of the New Aeon. The gods are everywhere present, and the nature of the gods keeps incorporating the present and becomes greater with every occurrence, it holds within it the past present and future; to unite with the gods and align our intuitions and creativity to the Collective Unconscious is the Great Work. Lesser divinatory practices such as the one’s presented in this essay are the means by which we align ourselves with what Crowley called Man-Soul, Iamblichus called the gods and what Jung referred to as the Collective Unconscious.

Porphyry:

"Others who are affected by standing upon indented marks, like those who have been filled from an imperceptible inflowing of divine pleroma."

Iamblichus:

“… it is employed by many persons in falsehood which may not be tolerated. Nor is there any good present at all, but a certain motion of the soul is produced which is repugnant to the gods, and allures from them a certain indistinct phantom-like apparition which sometimes, because of the transient power, is likely to be thrown into disorder by spiritual emanations of evil demons.”

Necromancy perhaps, but we may also liken it to modern day Satanism masquerading as Luciferianism, that only amounts to devil worship. It is a filthy practice; that has nothing in common with Thelema or Theurgy. Indeed, demons are called upon within the praxis of Thelema and Iamblichean Theurgy, however they are by no means worshipped or revered as the gods, they are merely a means to perfection, as they form part of the celestial hierarchy and are in closer proximity to the gods. The demon worship of modern-day Satanism is qliphotic, as even their theology is clearly a lie and as they themselves believe the lie, it is clear that they have been misled. When a person summons a demon and they have not adequately attained union with the celestial races or the motivation for the operation is not the perfecting of the individual, instead being the exaltation of his lower nature, the force is corrupted, and it becomes black magick. Any and all perceived successes in such operations are deceptive, whether entirely or partly; they merely serve to lead the black magician further away from the Truth, binding him to his own obsessions and delusions, and utterly abhorred by psychopomps.

"For when thou affirmest that “some are affected by standing on indented marks” thou seemest to signify nothing else than the cause of all the evils relating to these things. For there are some who overlook the whole matter of the Perfective Vision, not only in regard to the one making the invocation, and also the Beholder, but they likewise hold in contempt the arrangement of religious worship and the most sacred ordeal of encountering prolonged penance and also reject the sacred laws and ordinances and other Holy Rites. They consider the standing upon identical marks to be enough, and imagine that by doing this for a single hour there is a certain spirit introduced. Yet how may anything worthy of perfective take place from these things?"

This brings Christianity directly into the realm of black magick and devil worship, the “Perfective Vision” is another way of saying the “Vision of Beauty”, and is associated with the sphere of the Sun and the Holy Guardian Angel. Any religion that doesn’t hold this attainment at the core of its doctrine such as do Thelema and Iamblichus’ Theurgy falls squarely into the category of black magick. The corruption perpetrated by Christianity by way of a Great Sorcery, has led to the devastating effect it has had on western civilization. When Jesus in the bible says “whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters”, he is by definition the devil as per the dispersive nature of this god-awful quote when read in messianic terms. But added to this is the materialist doctrine of Christianity, which has enslaved and corrupted the soul of western civilization, making it an unredeemable faith. The following quote from LIBER LIBRÆ by Aleister Crowley affirms the stand that Iamblichus is taking in regards to the “sacred laws and ordinances of Holy Rites”  “In the true religion there is no sect, therefore take heed that thou blaspheme not the name by which another knoweth his God;”  he further affirms what has been stated above in the following from LIBER LIBRÆ. “Thou then, who has trials and troubles, rejoice because of them, for in them is Strength, and by their means is a pathway opened unto that Light.” “How should it be otherwise, O man, whose life is but a day in Eternity, a drop in the Ocean of time; how, were thy trials not many, couldst thou purge thy soul from the dross of earth?” The black magician is guided by selfish motivations and the ordeals associated with attainment and ordinances observed at sacred rites meant to purge our souls from the dross of earth, is thus shunned by him as they will drive a wedge between him and his selfish intent, which remains guarded by his lower nature.

Porphyry:                                                                                                                                                                     “"Others who understand themselves in other respects be one divinely inspired through frenzy: some taking darkness as accessory, others employing certain potions, and others depending on singing and magic figures. Some are affected by means of water, others by gazing on a wall, others by the hypaethral air, and others by the sun or some other of the heavenly luminaries.”

Iamblichus:                                                                                                                                                   "All this kind of divination which thou describest as being a numerous species may be comprehended in a single faculty, which may be denominated the “Bringing of Light.” This evidently shines however with a divine luminance upon the ether-like and brilliant vehicle which surrounds the soul, from which vehicle the divine imaginations, being set in motion by the will of the gods, take possession of the faculty of imagination in us.”

Scrying is an important practice for developing intuition and the creative faculty, it is through the practice of scrying that we build up our astral bodies to withstand greater influx of the light that leads to more understanding and accurate interpretation of matters concerning the gods. Throughout Iamblichus’ interpretation of divination, very little of it is concerned with divining the future, in fact the focus, as he states in the above quote is “Bringing of Light”, that illuminates our astral bodies and links the unconscious with the conscious mind, so that one is able to bring back inspiration received from the gods and come to a greater knowledge of self. Drugs such as LSD has the same effect and drugs of a similar nature have also been used for a long time to bridge the gap between the conscious and the unconscious minds. The witches used to make a flying ointment from various plants to produce the same effect, this ointment was made of Belladonna, Datura, Mandrake and Henbane, all of which are extremely poisonous and of the Nightshade variety. They would make an ointment from these various flowers and smear it all over their bodies before straddling broomsticks and running around in a circle. After waking up from their trances, they recalled vivid accounts of being at the Witches Sabbath the night before.

“There are also many other ways for bringing down the Light; but they may all be reduced to one, namely its illumination in whatever way and through whatever instrumentalities the gods may choose to shine forth.”

These are all equally legitimate as sacraments and when employed thusly lead to authentic encounters with the gods. It is the aim of these practices to unite with the collective unconscious and raise the intuition via the creative faculty, thus drawing inspiration from an infinite storehouse which may then become manifest in the material world as insights of Genius.

“Come, then, let us pass on to the mode of divining which is carried into operation through a human technic, and involves much guessing and expecting. In regard to this thou speakest as follows: “Some have likewise established the technic of searching the future by means of entrails, birds and stars.” “So then to tell the whole story this method makes use of many signs and symbols which have in various ways been made efficacious by the gods. From the divine tokens, according to the relationship of things to the signs that have been exhibited, the technic in some way arrives at conclusions, and guesses at the augury, inferring it from certain probabilities.”

The symbolism inherent in such methods of divining as Tarot and Geomancy work as intermediaries between us and the collective unconscious, they speak directly to the unconscious mind. But as we are not directly connecting with the gods, we are reliant on accurately guessing the answer. These forms of foretelling the future are also not prophetic, as is the case with some of the techniques that have already been discussed, as they rely on the context created by a question posed and their accuracy is largely a matter of how well the symbols are understood and interpreted in conjunction with the question.

“In like manner, therefore, they generate all things by means of images, and likewise signify them beforehand through instituted emblematic representations. Equally, also, by this means, they excite our faculty of understanding to a greater acuteness. Let these things, therefore, be determined in common to all technic of this kind that men have devised.”

These forms of divination may be employed by everyone as the symbols are universally understood by us as they are unconsciously perceived and link us to the gods in this way. They raise our level of insight into the nature of the problems presented in readings, although they do raise our understanding and may be employed by all, the depth at which they are understood will obviously affect the accuracy of the reading.

Porphyry:                                                                                                                                                                       “The diviners all say that they arrive at their foreknowing of the future through gods or demons, and that it is not possible for others to have an inkling of it---only those who have command over the things to be.”  “I dispute whether the divine power is brought down to such subserviency to human beings, as, for instance, not to hold aloof from any who are diviners with barley meal.”

Iamblichus:                                                                                                                                                                       “But when thou appliest the term “subserviency” to the provincial care and protection that we enjoy thou fail aright to understand the vastness and power of the gods, the goodness transcending and the causality which includes all things. Besides, thou overlooked the mode of energy, that is neither attracted downward nor turned toward us, but proceeds us, as being separate from us and entirely distinct. It, indeed imparts itself to the recipients, but in this it neither goes out from itself nor becomes lessened, nor is it subservient to those that participate of it.”

It is not the intellective faculty that is in communication with the gods, but it is the soul and the light of the spirit that in union becomes the medium between us and the gods. The light therefore cannot in anyway be subservient to man, and man serves only as the conduit for inspiration received. Inspiration from the gods is thus realized and manifests as prophecy and works of a divine nature, once an individual has made himself worthy for the reception of the gods.

“But on the other hand, it shares its benefits with all, and makes all to be like itself. It not only serves those abundantly that belong to its circle, but the more it remains by itself; it preserves them in every way, but remains complete in itself so much the more it is filled by its own stores. It does not itself become of the quality that participate of it, but it renders its partakers similar to itself; it includes them within its own sphere, but at the same time is neither mastered nor encompassed by any one of them.”

The light connects the unconscious to the ether but remains separate from both, or is distinct from both who have united with each other as facilitated by the LVX. This distinction is necessary, as all things at all times are always surrounded by the light and connected to each other therein. However, it is only plausible to be considered the “astral light” once union between the soul and the gods have been attained and from which divine inspiration is received. The light emanates through the worlds having its origin in the First Principle and its nature is sempiternal. Thus, preceding all manifestation, it is an expression of all things equally, everything that occurs is stored within the light, but may only become perceptible through the art of divination, once an observer is introduced and then the divination is a unique expression based on one’s unique relationship to the world and the gods. But not unique to the light itself, as the light “shares its benefits with all” and only by applying the art of Theurgy, and specifically attaining communion with the gods may a person see into the light, and learn from what is stored there. The LVX is then filtered through our dealings with the gods, and one’s understanding and relationship to the gods will determine the efficacy of the operation.

“If, however, the power of the gods in this matter of prognostication extends to objects without soul, such as pebbles, rods, certain trees, stones, wheat or barley meal, this is itself a most wonderful form of predicting by divine vaticination, because it is an imparting to the soul to things that are without soul, and motion to objects that of themselves are incapable of moving, and makes everything clear and knowable, participant of the reasoning faculty, and definable according to the measures of intelligence, and yet having nothing of rationality by themselves.”

Divination of this kind is a most revered practice, as it is indicative of the diviner’s attainment and its accuracy is not dependent on the technique employed, but the adept’s unique relationship to the divine. The intuition being of primary importance in this manner and everything else becomes a beautiful display of artistry, as the creative faculty is thus displayed in the light of a divine communion.

“Thou introduces it at once in regard to the divinities that are the causative powers in the art of divination, by questioning “whether a god or angel or demon or some other such being, is present at the manifestations (epiphanies) or at the divinations or at any of the Sacred Performances.” The simple reply which we make to this is that it is not possible for the Divine Performances to be carried on in a manner befitting sacred matters without one of the superior races being present beholding and making the Sacred Performances complete. Accordingly, when the procedures are perfect, sufficient of themselves, and without defect, gods are their directors. But when they are only suitable for the intermediary races (as angels and demons), and fall somewhat short of what is due to the highest beings, then they have angels to make them complete and make the exhibitions. But those which are classed as the lowest and last are assigned to demons to be performed.”

In the same way as in modern ceremonial magick, the qabalistic hierarchy is strictly observed and Demons form the first link between an individual and the higher celestial races. In fact, linking the soul to the highest races can only be systematically achieved. One does this by observing the hierarchical structure outlined and uniting accordingly with these races. It would not be sufficient to neglect any one of these races when the aim is perfection. Each part of Theurgic ceremony would then be imbued by the symbolism in accord with the race that is called to be present at that specific juncture of the operation, for example the temple furnishings and circle of the Greater Key of Solomon compared to that of the Lesser Key, are reflective of this principle, and anyone who has been fortunate enough to have experienced formal initiation may recall the same principle having been employed at the ceremony.

“We do not grant in the least what thou throwest out as an acknowledged fact, namely: That the superior beings bring these things to pass “as having been drawn thither, through us, by the necessities created by the invocation.” For the god and the entire chorus of the superior beings connected to him are superior to necessity---not alone from the necessity which is induced by human beings, but also the necessity which holds the world in grasp.”

It is a shift in focus that manifests the gods and other races making them partakers in these ceremonies. They are always present for they are aspects of each our individual natures, the invocations serve to awaken us to the fact and does not and cannot have an effect on the wills of the higher races. These higher races are to a greater or a lesser degree perceptible and where our focus is, may easily be analyzed, by studying the nature of these races, for instance, if my focus is concentrated and in accord with the race of the gods then, I may present with gifts of a divine nature and to that of demons that which is demonstrated would thus be aligned with the nature of demons. The shift in focus here discussed and the level of force that may be concentrated depends also on aligning the will with the Logos or Demiurge, as the gods have been and are but emanations of the Demiurge, it is the human will that is to be brought in line with the will of the Demiurge, before efficacy can be reached in Theurgic operations.

“Then, again, the invocation and rites performed by the adept in superior knowledge bring them to the superior races and attach them together by becoming assimilated and of the same household; but they never bring their operations to completion by compulsory endeavor.”

Therefore, the adept achieves union throughout the worlds and becomes as a god, this union is an act of will and the Great Work is thus performed as the result of this union. However, it is a natural and evolutionary change as the adept becomes godlike, whereby his nature is reflected in his work. This assimilation is characterized by perpetual growth and not associated to chance or a stroke of luck.

“What is human when it is compared with the divine is base, insignificant, and a mere plaything. Hence I laugh when I hear that the god is automatically present with certain persons or objects, whether through the Cycle of nativity or through other causes. For if he is controlled by the Cycle of nativity the unbegotten divinity will not then be the superior; nor will he, as he is himself arranged with certain things with reference to other causes, be primarily a cause of all things. These suggestions, therefore, are also entirely unworthy of the conception which we should entertain in regard to the gods, and are entirely foreign to the performances which take place in Theurgy.”

The nature of the Demiurge is impersonal and although the perception and relationship with the gods is unique for every individual, the nature of the Demiurge is immovable and the same for everything. The gods therefore do not adapt themselves to us, but we cultivate a relationship with them through the practice of Theurgy and Theosophy, so that once perfection is attained, we may know the nature of the Demiurge and do the will of God unhindered, in harmony with the Logos.

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 6:

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 6:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

“All other things are subject as instrumentalities for the gift of foreknowledge which has been transmitted from the gods. These include both such as relate to our soul and body as are inherent in the nature of everything or in the individual natures of every one.”

The tools used in divination have no divining capabilities in themselves they merely serve as mediums between us and the gods. The symbols inherent in these tools are reflective of the nature of the gods and these natures are the same in everyone. We all speak to and understand the gods through the same symbols and so these tools are linked to our intuitive understanding of these universal symbols.

“If, however, any one is thinking he is saying something erudite, shall refuse to consider the primary causes, *but shall attribute the art and faculty of divining to operations of inferior character, such as the activities of the bodies, or changes of conditions, or to different movements or operations of human life, or to reasons of a psychic or physical nature; or if he shall argue from the correspondences of these things to others as being causes, presuming that he is setting forth what is true, he has gone entirely wrong.”

The art of divination is not an intellectual activity but is concerned with the intuition as guided by the influence of the gods. As mentioned previously, the gods know everything past and future and it is by interpreting this knowledge that divination is performed. Anyone who is raised to and united with the gods are instantly able to access these insights and the tools are there to facilitate this union, such is the nature of Tarot cards when used in divination for example. However, the efficacy of Tarot divination, or any other form of divination has little to do with erudite knowledge of the cards themselves.

“It likewise comprehends beforehand the essence and cause of things about to take place, from which, of necessity, the attaining of foreknowledge comes unceasingly.”

Divination therefore is associated with the intuition which is a greater awareness of reality leading to greater accuracy in our predictions, that necessarily follow the current circumstances of objective reality. The gods being omnipresent and omniscient manifest their omniscient nature to the soul in this way, we merely interpret cause and effect from the vantage point of the gods via the art of divination.

“Since therefore, the mind contemplates the things that have real being, but the soul encompasses in itself the principles of all things that exist in the sphere of generated existence, it follows, of course, that, answering to the cause which comprehends future events, it prognosticates them, as arranged by their antecedent principles.”

Establishing a communication between the mind and the soul thus bringing the unconscious images received by the soul from the gods and interpreted by the mind as they correspond to the enquiry is how the art of divination is affected. The relationship that the question holds to antecedent principles is how we may conclude accurate answers in divinatory practices and dreams. Thus, there must be a connection established throughout the three worlds in order to obtain accurate answers or visions, the knowledge acquired via the theoretical study and the interpretation of the symbolism of the gods is the means by which the mind occupies the divinatory art, a union between the soul and the gods can only be established by practicing the art of Theurgy. The tools used in these practices may give the visions in an instant. However, these visions are of no use, if the previously mentioned connection has not been established. Nor would there be any way of correctly interpreting the visions if the symbols are improperly understood. The same principle is required when analyzing the nature of dreams that are of a divinatory nature, correct interpretation of such dreams would likewise be mostly inaccurate, if one isn’t familiar with the symbolism and has no frame of reference for such dreams as they correspond to circumstances in the material world.

“It also gives forth discoveries of arts, proper regulations for the administration of law, and institutions of customs. Thus, in the temples of Aklepios, not only are diseases brought to an end by dreams of divine origin, but through manifestation by night the medical art is combined with the sacred visions.”

It becomes clear then, that divination in dreams is not a supernatural phenomenon, nor is our connection to the gods supernatural, whose perfection is inherent in each of us the same. It is a heightening of intuition and creativity by establishing communication between the mind and the unconscious in dreams, whereby the revelations perceived may become useful to us as guides for progress in the world of matter.

Porphyry:

“In like manner many also come to a perception of the future through enthusiastic rapture and a divine impulse, when at the same time so thoroughly awake as to have the sense in full activity. Nevertheless, they by no means follow the matter closely as when in their ordinary condition.”

Iamblichus:                                                                                                                                              “Right her I wish to show the tokens in these occurrences of those who are really possessed by the gods. For they have ether placed their whole life at the disposal as a vehicle or organ for the inspiring gods, or they exchange the human for the divine life, or else they carry on their life in reference to the divinity. They are not acting by sense, nor are they watchful as those whose senses are aroused to greater acuteness, nor do they attempt to study of the future, nor are they moved as those who are active from impulse. On the other hand, they do not understand themselves, either as they were formerly or in any other way; nor, in short, do they exercise their own intelligence for themselves, nor do they put forth any superior knowledge of their own.”

There are two distinct types of people who present authentic characteristics associated to the possession of the gods. The first class are those who have devoted their lives as vehicles for divine inspiration, such as the prophetess at Delphi; and the second class are those who have experienced ecstasy and thus having been transformed, carry the influence of the gods into their everyday lives. This rapturous experience transforms these people in such a way that who they are now, has nothing in common with who they were before. It is transformative to such an extent that they commit the rest of their lives to the gods. This is real possession of the gods and not a fleeting occurrence of which the significance is not perceived within a lesser context. Thus, the exhalation of this divine influence is present throughout the remainder of one’s life, who has truly attained to mystical union with the gods.

“For on the one hand the gods by whom we are inspired are different, and communicate a different inspiration; and on the other hand the divine transports being changed, it occasions another form of divine impulse. For either the divinity possesses us, or we our entire selves become the gods own, or we are active in common with him. Sometimes we share the ultimate or the last power of the divinity, at another time the intermediate and sometimes the first. At one time there is a bare participation of these raptures; at another time there is also communion; and sometimes, again, there is complete union. Either the soul alone enjoys, or it has it with the body, or else the whole living individual shares it in communion.”

There, are not only one form of rapture; ecstasy presents as differing levels of intensity, some take over one’s entire being soul and body and are those usually ascribed to cataleptic trances associated with the gods. Whereas others leave us in control of the faculties of the physical body, wherein certain activities denoting to the gods take place. This may be understood that in some instances there is a complete union achieved as possessing body and soul, and at other times we are given inspiration that corresponds to the specific dealing with the gods.

“From this manifestation the sign of the god which is the most genuine, the most potent, and most perfectly ordered, becomes known to a certainty; and it is not only proper to proclaim what is true in respect to certain matters, or to exhibit the power or to complete the right with the adepts. But they who without witnessing these holy spectacles of the Sacred Rights, effect the conjuring of the spirits in some invisible manner, grope their way as in the dark, and know nothing of what they are doing, except some very small signs which are manifest through the body of the person who is divinely inspired and some other things which are plainly to be seen; and they are likewise ignorant of everything of divine inbreathing which is veiled in invisibility.”

The most dominant characteristics of the god whereby the person is possessed will become clearly noticeable as being embodied by the one who is under the possession of the god. For whom it has become an imperative to express the nature of the god, and these characteristics are unmistakable as pertaining to the nature of divinity. However, a person who has found himself under such possession will have no means of finding the correct expression for this possession, if he lacks the knowledge of its significance. Even though the same distinguishable characteristics are present, they may not be brought under the control of the will, whereby they are guided by the noetic faculty into manifestation.

“Suppose, accordingly, that the genuine art of divining was a liberating of the divine from the other soul or a separating of the mind by itself or an extending of its purview, or that it was a vehemence and extending of energy or passion or a sharpening or prompting of understanding or an inspiriting of the mind.”

From the above quote we see that divination is concerned with the soul’s connection with to gods with the mind being the analytical component, the body to a certain degree for certain works of divination may serve to hinder the process of receiving prophetic visions.

“But if the body is to be regarded as the cause of the inspired rapture or trance, on account of certain temperaments, either melancholic or some other, or to speak more particularly, on account of heat and cold and moisture, or some form of these, the mingling or tempering of them or the breath, would be the cause of the aberration, and it would arise from physical disturbances.”

In cases of extreme illness especially when accompanied by high fevers and also near-death experiences, the body serves as the cause for the prophetic visions. The soul being to a large extent disconnected from the physical body under these circumstances is free to experience divine ecstasy as an expression of its inherent nature.

Porphyry:                                                                                                                                                                              ”So also certain others of these ecstasies become entheast or inspired when they hear cymbals, drums, or some choral chant, as for example, those who are engaged in Korybantic Rites, those who are possessed at the Sabazian festival and those who are celebrating the Rites” of the Divine Mother.”

Iamblichus:

“We affirm accordingly, not only that the shoutings and choric songs are sacred to the gods, each and all of them, as being peculiarly their own, but likewise that there is a kindred relationship between them in their proper order, according to their respective ranks and powers, the motions in the universe itself and the harmonious sounds emitted from the motions.”

The ranks of the gods within their specific hierarchy are observed in the order that these rites are presented in the ceremony, serving to lead the participants systematically to higher and higher ecstasies as they are related to the gods.

“By the agency of such a relationship of the choric songs to the gods it is that their presence actually becomes manifest, for there is nothing intervening; and hence whatever has a mere incidental resemblance to them becomes immediately participant of them. There also takes part at once a perfect possession and filling with the divine essence and power. Nor is this because the body and soul are in each other, and effected alike in sympathy with the songs; but, on the contrary, it is because the inspiration of the gods is not separated from the divine harmony, and being allied with it, as being of the same kindred it is shared by it in just measure.”

The music and chants result in complete possession of mind and body by bringing both into perfect harmony with the nature of the gods, the nature of which are invariably constituents of the divine harmony. The music however just serves to express the fact that there is indeed no separation between us and the gods thus enlivening within the participant the type of ecstasy that leads to Bacchic frenzy.

“Thou seemest to think that those who are enrapt by the Mother of the gods are males, for thou callest them accordingly “Metrizontes”; yet that is not true, for the “Metrizontesae” are chiefly women. A very few however are males and such as may be more delicate. This enthusiasm has a power that is both life-engendering and perfective, in which it differs from every other type of frenzy.”

Bacchic rites are therefore an exaltation of the divine feminine, and it is by these rites that the generative potential of the spirit is enacted. The Bacchic frenzy is a celebration of the creative force of existence, and is not only perfective as a result of its attainment, upon recipients, but it, as the creative expression of creation itself is giving form to spirit within the context of the rite, thus enlivening the force of the egregore to which the ceremony is dedicated.

“It is acknowledged by everyone that the oracle at Kolophon gives its response through the medium of water. There is a spring in a house underground and from this the prophet drinks. On certain appointed nights, many sacred ceremonies having taken place before hand, he drinks, and delivers oracles, but he is not seen by the beholders that are present. It is manifest from this, therefore, that that water possesses an oracular quality; but how this is not every man, as the saying is, may know.”

The oracular nature of the spring could only be experienced by the prophet as it was his appointed office to be the prophet of the oracle. He had dedicated his whole life to being a vehicle of this divine inspiration. This was accomplished by the sacred ceremonies before hand to bring him into communion with the oracle and at the divinatory rites themselves he was not in view of the observers, thereby separating himself from any external sensory stimulus that could form a barrier between him and the oracle.

“Indeed before drinking the water he fasts an entire day and night, and as he begins to become entheast he withdraws by himself into certain sacred retreats.”

The prophet invokes the spirit for two days before the rite, to establish perfect union with the god of the spring, he accordingly fasts throughout this time. The fasting awakens the soul to greater awareness of the unconscious revelations of the oracle. Fasting would to a degree cause the body to aid the vision in the same way as mentioned previously in this essay, when a person experiences states of ecstasy due to high fever or near-death experience. However, in the state that the prophet is in, he is invoking the spirit which is specifically associated with the oracle, and he isn’t just overcome by visions, making his, an act of will. So, we can see from the above, that divination is a form of ecstasy, whereby we have established communication between the soul and the gods in such a way that visions originating in the collective unconscious perceived by the soul is understood by the intellect.

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 5:

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 5:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

“In short all these races make their receptive orders duly distinguishable, and they show at once the regions which have fallen to them, and the allotments in which they abide. Those that are of the air display aerial fire; the earthly a chthonian and darker light and the celestials a more splendid luminance. All these  races are distributed in these three regions (the earth, air and superior heaven) in the threefold order beginning intermediary and last, those of the gods displaying the highest purest causes pertaining to the threefold order; those of the angels being reckoned from the archangels; those of the demons being manifest as attendant upon these and those of the half -gods in like manner ministrant—not in deed after the same services as demons, but after other and different ways of their own. Those of the archons have the allotment which is set apart to them; to one class the superintendence of the cosmic world and to the other that of the realm of matter. The souls are classed as the last of the superior races.”

The archons concerned with the superintendence of the cosmic world establish the consequence of nativity by linking the body with the soul in such a way to the celestial bodies of the constellations as to make their influence manifest in the world of matter. Likewise, the archons of matter are concerned with the elemental character of souls within the realm of matter, thus these influences are brought to bear in life through the connection that has been established before birth and carried into manifestation in the material world. Demons correspond so closely with the soul that they are virtually indistinguishable from their influence and it is by their agency that the influence of the gods and higher celestial races are made manifest. The influence of these races starting from the superior heaven and manifesting to our perceptions in the material world, likewise carry the light all the way down from the supernal region and as their influence gets closer to manifestation, the light is dissolved through the three worlds and the Forms become more and more clearly expressed to the intellective faculty until it becomes solidified in the realm of matter. The three worlds are earth, air and superior heaven and are also expressed in man’s threefold nature, body, soul and spirit respectively. This three-fold constitution is in every respect joined and brought into union by what we call LVX or the light via which we’re linked to the primordial first cause. The perfect union that manifests as a consequence of the presence of the light is the reason for the soul’s potential to attain union with the higher races and the fact that there is any balance whatsoever, without which there is only the primordial union established in The One, thus this balance is established particularly as a consequence of the soul’s relationship with the higher worlds as an incarnated being.

“Thou sayest: “It is a common thing for the gods and demons alike, and with all the Superior races to speak boastfully, and to project an unreal image into view”.  Such is not the fact as thou supposest. For a god, an angel and a good demon (when they appear at the rites) give instruction freely to human beings, in regard to their own essence, but never in addition, make use in their teachings, of any expression greater than their transcendent power or inherent good qualities.”

The higher races have acquired perfect balance and are in every way perfectly suited to their allotted positions, they merely through having attained perfect union with the soul present the teachings of the gods perfectly from their appointed positions. Whereby their influence is incorruptible and so can never deter the soul via presenting impure influences that are not in complete harmony with that which has been freely given by the gods.

“When then does the untruthful act of “speaking boastfully” mentioned by thee take place? When there occurs some errancy in the Theurgic technique, and the images which ought to be at the Autopsia are not, but others of a different kind are encountered, then the inferior races assume the guise of the more venerable orders, and pretend to be the very ones that they are counterfeiting; and in such cases they abandon themselves to boastful speeches and pretensions of power which they do not possess.”

Hence the evil spirits are not demons; they manifest in the mind of the observer via the misunderstanding of divine truths and the improper application of its principles. When the symbolism employed in Theurgic operation is incongruous with the nature of the higher races the soul attracts impure spirits wishing to embody the offices of the higher races, this serves to sow discord in the mind and causes disharmony between the soul and the celestial races. These spirits are thus incomplete manifestations of that which one had tried to invoke and their effects may manifest in the psyche as mental illness and delusions. In other words, they through their imperfect nature failing, have misinterpreted the perfection emanating from the gods.

“For although we may know the peculiarities which are incident to each race of the superior beings, me may fail to hit upon the truth in regard to their operations. Yet without this knowledge the mystic union never takes place; nevertheless the union and knowledge are by no means the same thing. So, the divine purity is in no sense by means of the right knowledge, as that of the body is not through health; but on the other hand it is more completely one and more pure than knowledge.”

Thus, the symbols employed do not correspond to the intellective faculty but are understood on a deeper level as being communicated to the soul. And although without understanding the previously mentioned positions that form the divine hierarchy and their offices as they relate to the soul and those things in nature by which their offices are understood, union may not be attained. Knowledge can only take us to understanding of a limited nature, complete union is however attained, only by the employment of correct operation in Theurgic ceremony.

“Love is the law, love under will.”

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 4:

Theurgy of Iamblichus Part 4:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

“I say therefore that demons are produced by the generative and creative powers of the gods, in the furthest extreme of manifestation and the last divisions: but that the heroes or half gods have their origin in the forces of life in the gods; and that the superior and highest in rank in the souls are brought to completeness and distinguished from these forces.”

The demons are linked to mind and perception and serve the noetic faculty, they are not evil as they are an emanation of the one. The heroes are of the highest race they are the original souls that have completed the journey to oneness and have become as messengers of the gods, having imbued within them that quality which isn’t fixed and passive.

“Thus that of the demons is effective purpose, bringing to maturity the natures of the world and exercising guardianship individually over those coming into existence. Those of the heroes is life-sustaining, promotive of the reasoning faculty, and directive of souls.”

The function of the heroes therefore is supported by the demons as the inherent qualities of souls are expressed perfectly through the reasoning faculty. These two races then work together to facilitate the progress of souls on the material plane, however that of the heroes is of a higher order as to direct humans towards the purpose being inherent within the nature of the soul.

[…] the Soul is next, and ranks as the end of the series of divine beings. Having received from those two races a specific allotment of powers, it both augments the apportionment by other more abundant additions from itself, and likewise projects from itself at one time various forms and principles of life which are entirely different, and at other times others. Thus making use of different lives and ideals according to each region of the world, it is united with those that it likes, and draws away from those from which it may wish to be separate, becoming assimilated to all, and separated from them by otherness. In this way, choosing principles akin both to things that are sempersistent and to those that come into existence in time, […]

Accordingly, demons and heroes are an indication of the soul’s nature, and the soul brings with it certain qualities that work in conjunction with demons and heroes whereby these qualities are brought to task, so as to function at its highest qualitative level. As the soul is ethereal by nature it attracts to itself also those qualities that are harmonious with its own nature and through its place in the world it draws from experience adding greater potential from its surroundings. Those things that are through this process separated from the soul are not in harmony with its greater nature, thus it moves ever forward evolving in accordance with universal law, until it is again united with the first principle. The ontology of the soul is therefore indicated in its relationship with these races via a human being’s natural expressions and inclinations in everyday life, but not the True Will. Although maintaining the same relationship with these races, the True Will is of a higher order of souls, as it is manifested in those souls who have attained perfect union with the celestial races through the Art of Theurgy.

“In autoptic visions of the gods, the most brilliant spectacles of reality itself are to be beheld. They not only shine steadily but they are plainly visible as if in organic shapes. The images of the archangels present themselves to view genuine and perfect. Those of the angels preserve the form itself, but they come short in the completeness of distinctive tokens. Those of the demons are scarcely perceptible, and those of the half-gods are still inferior. Those of the archons are clear, and the archons of the realm of Matter are indistinct, but both classes seem to be exercising authority.”

As the generative influence of the divine light is first experienced from the realm of the gods and finally manifests in the material world, the influence at the beginning is clearly seen as something unique and inspirational, as blessedly received by the subject from the celestial spheres. However, as this influence gets closer to manifestation it becomes more undefined and at last it becomes inseparable from our perception and its manifestation into material existence. The demons and half-gods being in such close relationship to the mind become virtually indistinguishable from the source of its expression, and the observer beholds only the expression itself. The archons are of a different nature and may be likened to the impulses of the soul in its relationship to the things of the material world. Their influence is directly perceived as exercising authority over the will of the individual with the potential to blind him from his place within the hierarchy of divine races. They are thus charged with dominion over the earth and the elements, through them worldly things are acquired, however not corrupt within themselves their seductive nature may inspire corruption within an individual. Therefore, we are charged by the “Book of the Law” that every act of love be dedicated unto Nuit, whereby we may be guided towards ultimate truth through observing all acts as acts of devotion, thereby turning life into a joyful sacrament dedicated to the exaltation of the gods.

I,51: There are four gates to one palace; the floor of that palace is of silver and gold; lapis lazuli & jasper are there; and all rare scents; jasmine & rose, and the emblems of death. Let him enter in turn or at once the four gates; let him stand on the floor of the palace. Will he not sink? Amn. Ho! warrior, if thy servant sink? But there are means and means. Be goodly therefore: dress ye all in fine apparel; eat rich foods and drink sweet wines and wines that foam! Also, take your will and fill of love as ye will, when, where, and with whom ye will! But always unto me.

I,52: If this be not aright; if ye confound the space-marks, saying: They are one; or saying, They are many; if the ritual be not ever unto me: then expect the direful judgments of Ra Hoor Khuit!

Liber AL vel Legis:

“And, further, this fact is to be kept in view: that everything of the visible likeness that is pure and stable thou shouldst attribute to the Supreme Races.”

Here Iamblichus is referring to the material world: the world of matter is in every way perfect and is where the soul finds expression, thus it is here in the final emanation wherein Spirit is liberated to partake in the joys of incarnated life.

“Souls are infected with extraordinary defilements and alien spirits. With these defilements each of these races exhibit itself at the epiphanies.”

The defilements of the soul are those things that are not in accord with our True Wills. The epiphanies received from the corrupting influence of these alien spirits, are thus in conflict with our true natures and serve to guide us astray and away from the nature of our aspirations, which are in harmony with the Spirit and by which the True Will is made manifest.
