No-Soul or A-Soul?

 No-Soul or A-Soul?

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law."

Unique to the White School of Magick is the idea of a soul which needs to be created, while the Yellow School believes in no-soul or Anata. In Daoism once the student has mastered the basics of Alchemy they are tasked to practice their art in front of a wall for 10 months and from this is created a body in the ether which can be compared to our western idea of the soul, this fact makes Daoism undeniably a White School Philosophical System. If when we die we become part of the universal consciousness or Nuit, then what is the purpose of the soul? And what is the soul? This is one of the most fundamentally important aspects of our tradition, but is also one of the most overlooked.

We can say that, when we are born, we are born without a soul that our ethereal body is just a chaotic conglomeration of star stuff. It is at the point in time when a child becomes self-conscious and realizes the “I” that the soul starts to form. The Yellow School would have us believe that the path to immortality is for us to abandon this very natural development, to realize Anata and proclaim that I am Nothing. Ha! Thelema says that the closer we can come in this life and the more aware, the closer to the goal we will be in our next lives. Everything remembers from plants to animals and even on a subatomic level, hence the phenomena of evolution occurs. It is the subatomic part of our constitutions which we are developing. If the formation of the soul is indeed natural and there is no immortality for me as an individual, the White School proposes a way to gain immortality. Our immortality is sought in our quest to accomplish the Great Work, now; not everyone will accomplish the Great Work by deciding to become Thelemites. This will however stand us in better stead in the next life as being born a bit more evolved and closer to the aim.

If we could see the whole spectrum of colors we would most certainly be able to see the soul in the same way that clairvoyants see the aura. What does the soul look like then? Not all souls look the same, a very under-developed person's soul would look like the smoke from a hundred incense sticks bunched together all pointing in a different direction, whereas that of “asar un nefer” the perfected-self would look like a hundred incense sticks bunched together as one to form one single stream of perfectly congealed white smoke, the former's smoke is black. As this phenomenon is not perceptible to the naked eye we need to use our intuition and creativity to see through the eyes of the soul. The undeveloped soul is black as a result of impurities present therein and in contrast the latter has been purified and equilibrium has been achieved.

Once the Spirit, the Soul and the Physical Body start working in unison, we become aware of our True Wills and we start doing The Great Work. The True Will is then working in perfect accord with the will of god or the True Will is the canvas upon which the Adept renders his eternal masterpiece. This masterpiece is the Great Work so that the names of those who have achieved this are written down in the annals of history forever. Such are the likes of Dionysus, Tahuti, Moses and many others. Creating the soul is the way for us to achieve this so that our names may one day be written as constellations among the stars.

"Love is the law, love under will."
